I realize now that the 11 months I’ve been active on the forums, I’ve only liked 407 posts. I really only use my likes for special occasions, and I know that’s normal, but it’s very special occasions that I like posts. I don’t know, maybe just me.

In my opinion, not at all. Everyone chooses how they want to use their likes, and if you feel like you should save them for special posts, go ahead! I myself like everything I agree with, find funny, or interesting… meaning I like a lot of posts.
There are quite a few people who use their likes sparingly like you, and that definitely doesn’t make then selfish.

If we can value every user’s likes/hearts by how many they give, we can safely assume that vurm’s can be traded for any amounts of dirt blocks.
