Making a WoolWars map
Interested in designing your very own WoolWars map that could be put into the game for the community to play on? This post will provide the information on how to do so!
Obtaining the map template
You can download the map template at this link. Simply unzip the file, and move the world folder to the correct location on your PC. Don’t know how? Check out this tutorial.
Once you are in the world, you will find a chest with book inside explaining a whole bunch of details on how to build your map!
Building your map
Details
- A normal map has 24 players.
- A tournament map has 50-100 players.
- A duel map has 2 players.
Game version
It is crucial you build your map in the Minecraft version 1.8.9, as that is what WoolWars runs on. If you have any blocks from newer versions, they will disappear when opened in 1.8!
Map layout
Make sure to remember that WoolWars has mostly vertical PvP where height is an advantage, so remember to fill your map with lots of places for players to fight and not leave lots of empty space!
You can adjust the template map however you like, or even create your own arena from scratch. The arena does not have to be circular - it can be square or even more abstract shapes such as an irregular polygon. It all depends on what you are going for!
Tournament maps should be much larger than the template and duel maps should be a lot smaller and designed with only 2 players in mind.
Special blocks
There are a few special blocks:
Block | Quirk |
---|---|
End portal frame | Turns into a lootable chest when the game starts. |
Sandstone | Sandstone blocks (not slabs, stairs, etc) will instantaneously kill players when they step on it. It is highly discouraged to use this block, but if you do make sure to mention it and why you’ve used it in your submission post. |
Bedrock | Blocks adjacent to bedrock cannot be broken during the match. |
Barriers | Blocks adjacent to barriers cannot be broken during the match. |
Parkour block | The block you choose to build your parkour out of will be replaced with air when the game starts. This will happen across the entire map. |
Making your map secure
Players may be able to escape your map or get stuck in your map if you are not careful. Build your map with this in mind.
- The Vanish kit can escape the map if there are any blocks outside the map that are not entirely covered by either bedrock or barriers.
- Teleporter has enderpearls and enderpearls can be found in chests so bear that in mind.
Encase the entire map with either bedrock or barriers, including putting a 5-block layer roof made out of barriers. Make sure there are no gaps for players to hide in between the map wall and the bedrock/barrier wall.
Make sure the bottom of the map has multiple layers of bedrock to prevent lighting-update framerate lag at the start of the game.
Do not use diamond, iron or gold blocks or ore in your map as they can be mined and turned into armour, weapons or tools.
Parkour
Include the parkour in your map, please don’t provide two map downloads for one with parkour and one without!
Make the parkour out of one type of block that doesn’t have differing block states. For example, if a block can be orientated (such as logs), it is not a good block to use.
Ladders, vines, trapdoors and any other block that breaks automatically when not connected to anything can be placed on the parkour blocks to add variety to your parkour.
Player spawn podiums
This is where each player is teleported to during the 10 second countdown before the game starts. Make sure there are enough podiums for each player (i.e. 24 on a regular map) and they are made from a unique block not used elsewhere in the map.
Submitting your map
First of all, you need to upload your map to a reputable hosting platform, such as Google Drive. You need to zip your map folder with a program like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
We do not accept World Edit schematic files, please only submit map folders.
Once you have a public shareable link for your download, make a new post here and title it:
MAP_NAME WoolWars Map Submission
Where MAP_NAME
is the name of your map.
Make sure to give the post the Map-Submission tag.
In the post, please use the following format:
**Map name**:
**Creator(s)**:
**Map type**: NORMAL/DUEL/TOURNAMENT
**Parkour block**:
**Player podium block**:
**Images**:
**Map download link**:
Please include some images uploaded directly to the forums and do not forget to include a download link.
You may also include extra information such as the coordinates of where players should spawn when joining the pre-game using the portal or /play
, how many players the map can host if its a tournament map, etc.
When to expect a response
Depending on development schedule your map may not receive a response for quite a while - months potentially! Do not fear though - your map will not have been forgotten about!
If your map ends up not being added to the game - don’t be discouraged! We are always happy to have new or improved submissions, so keep at it!
