right lads, big thanks to Sarcasticguy139 for giving their best wishes for this manual and inspiring much of the information included here. this guide hopes to offer more in-depth assistance with challenge mode and further information. their original post can be found here: Guide to WoolWars Challenges
Introduction
What is Challenge Mode?
Challenge mode is a way for experienced WoolWars player to put their skills to the tests. It’s unlocked at level 50 and has a wide variety of challenges that are chosen randomly at the start of the game.
Star Rating System
Each challenge is rated out of 5 stars: 1 being the easiest, and 5 being the hardest. These stars are based on my personal experience and the amount of wins I have on those challenges (this can be seen by hovering over the challenge when running /challenges). The challenges are first ordered in terms of their token multiplier, and then their star rating.
The Manual
1.5x Multiplier
Slowness ☆
Have Slowness I applied all game!
Slowness is an often unnoticeable debuff that may hinder you in miscalculated jumps and a small disadvantage in PvP combat.
Splashing a swiftness potion on yourself with this challenge will offer a 2% buff from regular walking speed (1.2x0.85=1.02). Speedster and Vanish kit both also add to your speed in a similar fashion: being applied along with the slowness debuff.
As with many challenges, this challenge mainly prohibits your close combat ability, so make use of rods, snowballs and other projectiles.
Mining Fatigue ☆
Have Mining Fatigue II applied all game!
Its rare especially in low-player games to be breaking many blocks.
In a situation where you have to break blocks you’ve placed, it’s best to use wool and not wood or cobblestone.
Carry shears with you. With mining fatigue II , mining wool takes 13.875 seconds (1.25s regular time), but with shears that time is reduced to 2.775s (0.25 regular time), making it a very manageable difference, especially if your playstyle oft finds you blocking yourself in.
Careful when using cobwebs: try to land close to the edge of the web, as while regular breaking time is 4.4s with mining fatigue 2, usually when cobweb clutching youre not on the ground, so the breaking time is multiplied.*
TNT is a useful item as you can access a chest/player/area that is blocked in quickly.
- This section is considered incomplete as I don’t know where to find the exact multiplier for breaking blocks while floating in a cobweb/floating in general. If you have information to add please message me here on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
Weakness ☆
Have Weakness I applied all game!
Weakness, like Slowness and Mining Fatigue, are rarely noticeable and only require a slight change to any head-on playstyle you might use.
If forced to fight a player, ensure you’re using nearby cliffs and drop-offs to your advantage as unless you are at a big gear advantage you’re likely to drop first.
! This section is unfinished. Exact values for weakness were unable to be found reliably and as such exact calculations were unable to be made. If you have information with a reliable source, please message me on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
Source
Fragile ☆☆☆
You will only have a maximum of 7 hearts!
Fragile renders you particularly weak to chip damage attacks, such as hit-and-run rushes and bowshots/fireballs.
When playing with this challenge, play conservatively and save healing (especially golden apples, as absorption brings you closer to a level playing field) for particularly precarious moments.
Take fall damage seriously. The lethal fall height formula is: Fatal falling distance = health + 3.5. Your max health as a regular player is 20, however its reduced to 14 with the fragile challenge. This means that your fatal fall height is now 17.5, rather than the original 23.5. Adjusting to being careful with smaller heights is vital for this challenge.
As with many challenges, take extra use of projectiles and knockback weapons. Reduced health means you’ll drop quicker in a close quarters fight.
(@BFI01 this should totally be a 2.0x challenge)
2.0x Multiplier
Hot Feet ☆☆
Standing still will cause you to take damage!
Hot Feet’s poison effect starts around 1.9-2 seconds.*
Often when looting chests you’ll have to take 2 cracks at it: stopping halfway through to move and stop the poison timer.
Jumping is a more effective stopper than moving side-to-side: if you move to the side too little, you wont have moved a full block and will start taking poison damage. With jumping, as long as the space bar is pressed youll have moved enough to reset the timer.
This challenge mainly only hinders looting: once you have gear, traversing the map and PvP are largely unaffected.
- This information was taken from 5 separate tests in the same game, with an average ping of 104ms.
Wool Allergy ☆☆
Standing on wool will cause you to take damage!
When standing on a block’s coordinate that is a wool block, you will take 8 ticks of poison damage over 4 seconds if you immediately step off after receiving the effect. Remaining on the wool will continue the poison damage.
When the poison is activated is unpredictable, however you are usually safe to jump on one block and immediately off while sprint-jumping, and safe to run across 1-2 and sometimes 3 wool blocks without poison.
Keep in mind that if you get poisoned from the challenge during the grace period, the effect can carry over through the end of grace and start hurting you.
Standing on the edge of a block wont register as being on top of it: this is the same reason you have to land on the centre of a wool block to take no fall damage with the Feather kit. This means you can still stack up easily enough, but be careful of being knocked into the middle of the block.
The poison for this challenge lasts longer than others, so try to avoid it even with healing as it hinders your movement greatly.
Be careful of maps with large wool platforms or wool spotted into the floor.
This is the most annoying challenge by far, imo. Enjoy!
Hardcore Mode ☆☆
As with the Fragile and Armorless challenges, play conservatively and keep fall damage to an absolute minimum. No point in saving healing: as soon as youre at the point where a healing potion is just enough to heal you to maximum, use it.
The Healer kit completely negates this challenge, and if this is one of the challenges youre looking to complete easily I would consider Healer kit for many challenges.
Hit-and-run tactics are less effective with this kit: it’s often better to let both you and your opponents get geared up and then face them head-on to the death: once you give then time to heal, they gain an advantage over you. That doesn’t mean throw your life away in every fight: if youre going to lose, feel free to run, but make sure to find healing before fighting again.
Trapped Chest ☆☆☆
Opening chests will spawn a hostile mob on top of the chest!
The mob will always spawn on top of the chest. This means they wont fall when spawned on a floating chest.
Chests that have a wall behind them will often suffocate the mob: in a wall as seen in the image, most of the time the mob will die.
If opening the chest spawns a creeper, close the chest immediately and try to get out of the creeper’s range. If it explodes itll blow up the chest and the contents will fall to the ground.
Skeletons are annoying, but are a good source of arrows. Try to kill them rather than knock them away, as they’ll continue shooting you from afar doing small amounts of damage and knockback.
Try opening the same chest many times to spawn a lot of mobs at a safe distance/in a box, then move out of their aggravation range/break open the box This will hinder other players that come near (and it’s really funny).
Armorless ☆☆☆☆
You are unable to wear any armor!
Armorless renders you particularly weak to chip damage attacks, such as hit-and-run rushes and bowshots/fireballs.
When playing with this challenge, play conservatively and save healing for particularly precarious moments.
As with many challenges, take extra use of projectiles and knockback weapons. Reduced health means you’ll drop quicker in a close quarters fight.
A good thing about the Armorless challenge is that you have to spend much less time looting: a sword, rod, and a long range projectile is likely all you’ll need in a game, and some healing along the way never hurts. Then you’ll want to spend your extra time getting yourself in a favourable position over your enemies.
Remember that fall damage limits your knockback taken for the tick you take it. This allows you to have an extra tick advantage over your opponent when jumping down to hit them. Use this to your advantage by hitting your opponent off a ledge without giving them a chance to lock you into a PvP fight.
Using utility items such as TNT, fireballs, and lava are particularly helpful with this challenge. Have no qualms about being annoying, especially in the late game when you’re going up against people with full iron armor. Lava is often your saving grace.
Explosive Feet ☆☆☆☆☆
Jumping will have a 10% chance of causing you to explode!
Why this challenge doesn’t have a 3.0x (or more) multiplier is beyond me: it’s the hardest challenge in the game by far. Winning relies on a great deal of luck.
Since jumping will kill you in 4 explosions, finding an alternative method of going up is your number 1 priority. Finding wood, or cobble (cobble provided there is wood somewhere accessible in the map) is good as you can craft stairs or slabs to assist you. Water is probably the most effective alternative to stacking up, followed by ender pearls (emergencies only: they’re rare to find).
Careful when swimming in water: the ‘bobbing’ movement when youre swimming at the top of a water block counts as a jump and can trigger an explosion.
Remember that jumping a few times is almost always necessary to win a game with this challenge. Prepare by saving up your healing: sometimes a crit can win you a fight, or help you escape someone with much more gear than you.
Taking vertical knockback can also cause you to explode! Be careful in fights and try to always have the health advantage.
Don’t be fooled: although Jump boost 2 gets you higher with supposedly less jumps, you can explode twice in one jump with the effect active.
The early game is the hardest for this challenge. Once you’re on a decently high platform try to lure players down to your level so you don’t have to ascend more.
! As this is an especially hard challenge, this section is considered incomplete. If you have tips or information to add, message me here on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
2.5-3.0x Multiplier
Heavy Pockets ☆☆☆
The more items you have, the slower you’ll move!
Play fast-and-loose with this challenge: The quicker the game is over, the less of an advantage your opponents will have over you. The essential items list is as follows:
- Sword, blocks (2 stacks max), armor
- Rod, bow, golden apples
- Healing potions, snowballs, fireballs
If in a stuck spot, move up the priority list in your head to see whats best to throw out. Instead of tossing fireballs, try chucking them at whoever’s close by!
Often you’ll find yourself with slowness 1 despite heavy inventory management: this is manageable. Follow some of the tips in the Slowness challenge section.
The Slowness I effect appears to activate when 8 slots are filled* (not the number of items in those slots), including filled armor slots. However, once that threshold is reached, it takes a while even after reducing your items to remove the slowness.
The Speedster kit effect helps out with the Heavy Pockets Slowness: even with Slowness III, you can move around regular walking speed (although you cannot jump)
!* This section is considered incomplete. Heavy Pockets appears to be slightly bugged: https://youtu.be/xJ97ysCLc1U , making it hard to collect information. If you have information to add, message me here on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
Weak Tools ☆☆☆
- Any tools you have on you will be close to breaking!*
If your aim in a fight is to knock your opponent away/onto the sandstone, use weaker weapons and save iron swords/diamond axes for fights on larger platforms.
Try using utility items like TNT, lava, and potions to avoid using weapon/tool durability.
Doing the rod trick is a great way to have unlimited projectiles. To do the rod trick, cast your line, and instead of right clicking again to pull it in, switch to another slot in your hotbar. This will make it so your rod will take no durability damage.
^ Rods aren’t affected by the challenge, but due to the nature of it, you may have to use it more. That is why the rod trick is included in this section.
Crafting weapons together for more durability does not work!
! This challenge is slightly bugged and you will often find your weapon returns with 1 durability before breaking again. This is not to be relied upon.
Assassin ☆☆☆☆
- You will be given a target to kill. If you kill anyone else, you will also immediately die! When your target dies, you will get a new target.*
Although you can’t kill someone who isn’t your target, not hitting someone whos attacking you is a death sentence. Knock them away (not into the sandstone!) to allow yourself to stack away from them.
Annoyingly, if your target dies to the sandstone or fall damage, you will not be given a new target (I am unsure if this is a bug). Keep on your target and tail them to ensure you get kill credit if they do end up falling.
When your target dies to sandstone, you will sometimes receive a new target around the 2 minute mark in the game. This is not particularly reliable though.
Sometimes its better to hold off on killing your target if you consider them an easier kill than most (and you trust them not to fall/ you’re close enough to hit them if they do). Let other players kill each other!
! As this is an especially hard challenge, this section is considered incomplete. If you have tips or information to add, message me here on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
Kill Frenzy ☆☆☆☆☆
Staying close to a player is more important than looting. Get a sword and go towards a player.
The timer (30s) starts counting before the grace period is over: this means once the game timer hits 30s, you will start taking wither damage.
Once you kill someone, use the 30 seconds to get close to another player while looting few chests. Projectiles are often helpful to get targets down to your level or to knock them onto the sandstone.
! As this is an especially hard challenge, and exact values for wither damage are not collected, this section is considered incomplete. If you have tips or information to add, message me here on the forums or @six#6090 on discord.
